Project Management in Global Delivery Model – Challenges and Opportunities: Tutorial Outline
Abstract:
The tutorial focuses on preparing the audience on how to manage a project in the Global Delivery Model (GDM). It starts with the definition of GDM and compares this paradigm with the traditional model, and then describes in detail the areas that are different in GDM and need special attention.
The tutorial covers in detail how the five project management process groups of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing are different in a GDM environment as opposed to the traditional model and provides tips and tricks to manage these processes in a GDM engagement.
The flow of the tutorial then moves on to the 9 Knowledge Areas of Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Human Resource Management, Communications Management, Procurement Management, and Integration Management. It covers how GDM impacts a project in these areas and what a project manager can do to be effective in each of these areas while managing a GDM project. This section lays special emphasis on Risk Management (since that is the biggest area of concern to all the stakeholders while considering a GDM engagement).
The tutorial is interactive (elicits active participation from the audience) and has real-life case studies to explain the most important points.
The key takeaways from the tutorial include ‘understanding of the unique challenges faced by a Project Manager (PM) of a GDM Engagement’ and how the PM can turn these into opportunities.
